Byouki ka na...
I've been feeling steadily worse all week. At first I thought it was just bad allergies, but now I'm getting non-allergy symptoms, like a stuffed up head (rather than just my nose), and a sick feeling in my throat and lungs. Meh... I might just call in tonight. I've got a week's worth of sicktime to use. And I found out the other day, if you don't use your sicktime, they buy it back from you at 50%. That's right. So they pay you more to not come in to work than they do if you show up every day. Way to motivate...
Kind of an odd night at work last night. I was feeling a bit off to begin with, and straight away I was put on a special project. We are gradually converting all of the racking in our store from 16 feet high to 12feet, some kind of safety thing. I was asked to drop all of the endcaps along the front aisle. Those are the racking that faces the front aisle, situated on the end of the racking of the smaller inside aisles. Anyways, for most of the job I will need to use an order picker, which is a lift truck that takes the driver up on a platform to reach high places. Handy, but it can't pick up pallets. You need a reach truck for that. Rather than trying to hog 2 pieces of equipment to myself all night, I went to my coworkers in each department and asked them if they could, if they got a chance, drop some of the pallets that needed to come down so I wouldn't have to keep switching. About half an hour later, I get a page from my boss, and he starts asking me if I'm going to work all the freight that the people who were now dropping pallets would have been working had I not asked them to. I, a bit dumbstruck, said nothing. Eventually, he said he could tell I felt bad about it, so he'd let me go. I walk off not sure what to think, because I thought I was doing the right thing. Later when he saw me, he said that he wasn't sure whether he wanted to kick my ass or to hug me for taking the initiative and delegating. I settled for none of the above ^_^. But by the end of the day, the general impression I got was that I did the right thing, he was just surprised to see people leaving their stuff for a few minutes to help me out. It's not like I said "Drop what you're doing right now and get those pallets down," but a couple of them *did* drop what they were doing, and I think he assumed I told them to. But it's all cleared up, and I think he was impressed, overall. Maybe. Ugh...
